Q: Can writing contests really help with my writing career? -Kurt

A: Definitely! The credit of winning a contest won’t carry the same weight with an acquiring editor as will previous publication, but it does indicate two things: that your work has passed at least one test among editors; and that you’re serious enough about your craft to get it out there in front of a reading public. In addition, contests give you vital feedback regarding the way your craft is or isn’t working, so in that way it’s a kind of workshop opportunity.
