Q: I have not heard from my agent [representing an action adventure novel] for at least six months. Is this a bad sign? -W. Raymond

A: After six months of patient waiting, you are entitled to ask for an update on the status of your book.  The silent treatment could mean any number of things: Your agent is swamped and hasn't even sent it to publishers yet.  He or she has sent it but publishers are swamped and haven't read it yet.  Your agent is waiting to hear from all the publishers who got the book before contacting you.  And so on.  If there is an offer, I guarantee you will be called immediately.  In any event, your agent should be willing to tell you to whom the book has been sent and to give you copies of any rejection letters.
