| Promoting Books from Different Publishers at the Same Time |

Q: When one book manuscript of a certain genre is under contract to be published by a small publishing company in a year, do I have to submit any other book manuscripts I have completed (different genres) to the same company? It doesn't state it in the contract, but is it a conflict of interest if I were to promote two different books by two different companies around the same time? -Liz A: What a great predicament to be in! Actually no, you are not obliged to submit your manuscript to the publisher who has accepted your first book if that's not stipulated in the contract. And no, there is no conflict of interest in promoting the books if they are in different genres, and so presumably have different audiences. Is there a specific reason, other than the difference in genre, that you want to go with a different publisher? Assuming there’s no problem in your relationship with Publisher Number 1, and you want to maintain a relationship with them, it is a courtesy to keep them abreast of your other publishing projects. Either offer them first option on the manuscript or at least let them know you’re having a second manuscript published elsewhere. Anne Bowling |
